Multi award-winning Criminal Justice to be remade in India

When the multi award-winning Criminal Justice first hit screens back in 2008, nobody could have predicted that less than ten years later it would be winning accolades all over again in the form of HBO’s The Night Of (2016). Today, BBC Worldwide have announced, at its annual Showcase event, that for a second time the ratings winning format will be remade in India, proving that Criminal Justice’s global appeal shows no sign of slowing down.

BBC Worldwide’s partnership with Aditya Birla Group’s Applause Entertainment  will see the two organisations working together to develop and produce an Indian version of the iconic BBC format, Criminal Justice. This will be the first time the Criminal Justice format will be developed in Asia.

The remake of Criminal Justice (10x40) which is yet to be titled, will be set in present day Mumbai where it will also be filmed and will feature a cast of notable Bollywood talent both on and off screen. The adaptation will aim to shine a light on modern India, where it will follow both the economic and class differences between a working class student moonlighting as a taxi driver and the wealthy female passenger he picks up one fateful evening. The story will play out in a media frenzy elevating the case to dizzying heights and fundamentally impacting on the accused and his extended family whose social standing will be severely affected as a result.

Sameer Nair, CEO, Applause Entertainment said: “Applause is looking to create premium content for Indian viewers to watch online, delivered on the back of the big digital highways that have been built through telecom and all other platforms that exist. We feel that BBC Worldwide, with its high quality content library and formidable reputation for making premium content in India, is the ideal partner to work with. Together, we are pulling expertise and resources to adapt  popular BBC formats here. We have picked Criminal Justice because of its global success and we believe that the Indian adaptation will meet the viewing needs of the Indian market.”

Myleeta Aga, SVP and GM, South East Asia and South Asia at BBC Worldwide said: “We are very excited to be working with Applause Entertainment, and are assembling an A-list cast of talent to ensure the highest standards of execution. We see Criminal Justice as just the first step in a long and fruitful partnership with Applause.  We are confident this partnership will result in many more incredibly popular and well-loved Indian adaptations of BBC formats.”

The original UK version of Criminal Justice is an award-winning British television drama written by Peter Moffat and produced by the BBC. Each episode focussed on a gut wrenching journey through the criminal justice series. The series won multiple TV awards including BAFTA, RTS and International Emmys. The US adaptation ,The Night Of starred John Turturro and Riz Ahmed who in turn won an Emmy for his performance.

BBC WORLDWIDE ON A QUEST TO HYPNOTIZE NEW AUDIENCES

Tuesday’s Child’s ‘You’re Back in the Room’ format to entertain viewers in Poland and Portugal in Spring 2018.

At its annual Showcase event in Liverpool BBC Worldwide announced today that the format license for You’re Back in the Room, a Tuesday’s Child title, has been sold to Poland and Portugal. The local versions of the hypnotic gameshow will be available to Polish and Portuguese audiences from Spring 2018.

In Poland the format is already in production by ATM Grupa for free to air channel TVN under the local title Hipnoza. It will consist of eight episodes and be hosted by one of the most popular TVN channel presenters, Filip Chajzer. The hypnotic twist will come from Artur Makieła, a hypnotist and a member of the British Association of Hypnotherapy.

Ten episodes of the Portugese version of the show will be produced by Shine Iberia for commercial broadcaster SIC. The local version called DivertidaMente will be hosted by João Manzarra, one of the most well-known presenters in Portugal, having been the host of entertainment series such as: So You Think You Can Dance, X Factor and Anything Goes. José Tejada who is part of Keith Barry’s team in UK, AUS and US will be the hypnotist.

You’re Back In The Room sees five complete strangers take on a series of seemingly simple tasks for cash prizes. The problem is that the contestants are hypnotised with specific triggers designed to completely interfere with the games, making them much harder, more frustrating and as a result, brilliantly entertaining.

The show premiered in UK in 2015 with a peak audience of 5.2 million viewers, ranking within the UK’s top ten highest rated Entertainment shows of 2015 and the highest rated new Entertainment launch of 2015. It has since been licensed to Australia, French Canada, France, Slovakia, Slovenia, USA, Colombia, Netherlands and New Zeland. The latest sale makes Poland and Portugal 10th and 11th territory where the format will have its local version.

Sumi Connock, Creative Director of Formats, BBC Worldwide said, “We’re delighted that this truly unique and brilliantly hilarious format is launching in another two markets. Hypnosis is a fascinating process that when teamed with a gameshow creates an utterly entertaining experience for both the contestants and the audience”.

Hipnoza will premiere in Poland on Saturday 3rd of March in the prime time slot, DivertidaMente will go to air in Portugal in Spring.
